In short

Unreal past: si hubiera…, habría…; for a result now, the conditional: estaría. Por mucho que and me extraña que take the subjunctive.

Your turn

Which one goes with if you hadn't fallen asleep, you wouldn't be so red now?

Options: si no se hubiera dormido, ahora no estaría tan rojo · si hubiera llovido, habríamos vuelto antes · por mucho que te ofrezcan

Show answer

if you hadn't fallen asleep, you wouldn't be so red now → si no se hubiera dormido, ahora no estaría tan rojo

How it works

Si + pluperfect subjunctive with the conditional perfect imagines a different past: si hubiera llovido, habríamos vuelto antes.

Good to know

When a past cause has a present result, mix them: si no se hubiera dormido, ahora no estaría tan rojo.

Good to know

Por mucho que + subjunctive means "however much". Me extraña que (I am surprised that) also takes the subjunctive.
