The -se forms: estuviese, fuese, hubiese, dijese; spoken hubiera for habría

Recognise the -se forms of the past subjunctive in letters and formal writing.

From the scene Si tú estuvieses aquí (If you were here)

In short

The past subjunctive also has -se forms: estuviese = estuviera, hubiese = hubiera. In writing, use habría for the result.

Your turn

Which one goes with he asked me to be his wife?

Options: me pidió que fuese su esposa (= fuera) · si estuvieses aquí (= estuvieras) · ¡si hubieses visto su cara! (= hubieras)

Show answer

he asked me to be his wife → me pidió que fuese su esposa (= fuera)

How it works

The past subjunctive has a second set of endings, -se: estuviese = estuviera, fuese = fuera, hubiese = hubiera, dijese = dijera.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

"No (blank) nacido", hijo. En una carta, se escribe "habría".

Options: habría · había · haya

Show answer

"No habría nacido", hijo. En una carta, se escribe "habría".

"Wouldn't have been born" — habría, dear. In a letter, you write "habría".

Good to know

They mean the same; you meet them in old letters, books and formal writing (and in Spain in speech).

Good to know

In everyday speech many people also use hubiera instead of habría in the result (yo no hubiera nacido), but in writing habría is the safe choice.
