Telling an old story: imperfect, preterite, pluperfect

Tell an old story mixing the imperfect, preterite and pluperfect.

From the scene En mis tiempos (In my day)

In short

In an old story: imperfect for description, soler for used to, preterite for single events, pluperfect for earlier events.

Your turn

Which one goes with I met him (one event)?

Options: lo conocí · las bodas eran diferentes · solíamos bailar

Show answer

I met him (one event) → lo conocí

How it works

In an old story, the imperfect describes how things were and what kept happening (eran, no llegaba).

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Llovió muchísimo, y el novio no (blank).

Options: llegaba · llega · llegará

Show answer

Llovió muchísimo, y el novio no llegaba.

It poured, and the groom wasn't turning up.

Good to know

Soler in the imperfect + infinitive = "used to" (solíamos bailar); the preterite tells single events (lo conocí, llovió); the pluperfect says what had already happened before that (ya había cosido, se había quedado dormido).
