Spanish grammar
Telling a crime story: preterite + pluperfect
Tell the story of a crime, saying what had already happened before each moment.
From the scene ¡Al ladrón! (Stop, thief!)
In short
Move a crime story forward with the preterite. Step back to what had already happened with había + participle.
Your turn
Which one goes with he had already escaped?
Options: gritó · lo había visto todo · ya había escapado
Show answer
he had already escaped → ya había escapado
How it works
The preterite moves the story forward, one event after another: Ramón gritó, llegó la policía.
Good to know
To step back to something that happened before that moment, use the pluperfect: ya había escapado (he had already escaped).
Good to know
Only había changes for the person: había, habíamos. The participle stays the same: había visto, habíamos atrapado.
