Me preguntó si… / cuánto…: questions about the past

Report the questions someone asked you, such as in a police statement.

From the scene Me preguntó si lo había visto (He asked me if I had seen it)

In short

Report yes / no questions with si, others with their question word, and move the verb one step back.

Your turn

Which one goes with if I could identify him?

Options: si podía identificarlo · me preguntó si lo había visto · cuánto dinero llevaba

Show answer

if I could identify him → si podía identificarlo

How it works

A reported yes/no question takes si (if / whether); other questions keep their question word, such as cuánto or qué.

Good to know

After preguntó, the verb moves one step back in time. «¿Lo ha visto?» becomes me preguntó si lo había visto, and «¿cuánto lleva?» becomes cuánto llevaba.

Good to know

After this si, the verb stays in the indicative: si podía, never si pudiera.
