Superlative + subjunctive: el mejor que haya probado nunca

Talk about the best, the most beautiful, the tastiest thing you have ever known.

From the scene El mejor café que haya probado (The best coffee I've ever tasted)

In short

After a superlative + que, use the subjunctive for ever: el mejor café que haya probado nunca. In a past story, hubiera.

Your turn

Which one goes with the best coffee I've ever tasted?

Options: el mejor café que haya probado nunca · el paisaje más bonito que haya visto nunca · la mejor cosecha que haya tenido la finca

Show answer

the best coffee I've ever tasted → el mejor café que haya probado nunca

How it works

After a superlative (el mejor, la más bonita, lo más rico…) + que, Spanish often uses the subjunctive to mean "ever, as far as I know", and nunca here means "ever".

Good to know

When you tell it in the past, move back to the pluperfect subjunctive: lo más rico que hubiera probado hasta entonces.
