Spanish grammar

Si + pluperfect subjunctive → conditional perfect

Imagine a different past: if something had (not) happened, something else would have happened.

From the scene Si no hubieras vuelto… (If you hadn't gone back…)

In short

For an unreal past, use si + hubiera + participle, then habría + participle. Never habría after si.

Your turn

Which one goes with if you (tú) hadn't gone back, we'd have conquered Madrid?

Options: si no hubiera vuelto, no se habría casado con él · si no se hubieran casado, no habrías nacido · si no hubieras vuelto, habríamos conquistado Madrid

Show answer

if you (tú) hadn't gone back, we'd have conquered Madrid → si no hubieras vuelto, habríamos conquistado Madrid

How it works

To imagine a past that did not happen, use si + hubiera (hubieras, hubiera, hubiéramos, hubierais, hubieran) + participle (the pluperfect subjunctive), and habría (habrías, habría, habríamos…) + participle for the imagined result.

Good to know

Only hubiera goes after si — never habría.

Javi

O sea que si no hubiera vuelto, no se habría casado con él...

So if she hadn't gone back, she wouldn't have married him...

What fills the gap?

O sea que (blank)...

Common mistake

Not habría or haya here. She (the abuela): the "if" part.

O sea que si no hubiera vuelto, no se habría casado con él...

So if she hadn't gone back, she wouldn't have married him...
