Spanish grammar

Mixed conditional: si + hubiera + participle → conditional (ahora sería…)

Say how the present would be different if the past had been different.

From the scene …ahora vivirías en Madrid (…you'd be living in Madrid now)

In short

When a different past would change the present, use si + hubiera + participle, then the simple conditional: ahora sería.

Your turn

Which one goes with if I hadn't left Galicia, I wouldn't be with Javi now?

Options: si no hubiera emigrado, ahora viviría aquí · si no me hubiera ido de Galicia, ahora no estaría con Javi · si se hubiera quedado en Madrid, ahora sería madrileña

Show answer

if I hadn't left Galicia, I wouldn't be with Javi now → si no me hubiera ido de Galicia, ahora no estaría con Javi

How it works

When a different past would change the present, keep si + pluperfect subjunctive (si se hubiera quedado) but put the result in the simple conditional: ahora sería, estaría, viviría.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Un momento... Si la abuela se hubiera quedado en Madrid, ¡ahora yo (blank) madrileño!

Options: sería · fuera · soy

Show answer

Un momento... Si la abuela se hubiera quedado en Madrid, ¡ahora yo sería madrileño!

Hang on... If Grandma had stayed in Madrid, I'd be a Madrileño now!

Good to know

Words like ahora or hoy show that the result is about the present.

if she'd stayed in Madrid, she'd be a Madrileña now si se hubiera quedado en Madrid, ahora sería madrileña

That if she'd stayed in Madrid, she'd now be a Madrileña through and through.
