Spanish grammar

Mixed conditional: si + imperfect subjunctive → conditional perfect

Explain a past result by a permanent trait: if I weren't so…, I would have….

From the scene Si no fuera tan orgullosa… (If I weren't so proud…)

In short

When a lasting trait explains a past result, use si + imperfect subjunctive, then habría + participle.

Your turn

Which one goes with if you weren't so stubborn, she'd have gone to find you?

Options: si usted no fuera tan cabezota, habría ido a buscarla · si no fuera tan orgullosa, le habría escrito cien más · si ella no fuera tan orgullosa, me habría contestado

Show answer

if you weren't so stubborn, she'd have gone to find you → si usted no fuera tan cabezota, habría ido a buscarla

How it works

When a permanent trait or present situation explains what did or did not happen in the past, put the trait in si + imperfect subjunctive (si no fuera tan orgullosa.

But I am proud) and the past result in habría + participle (le habría escrito).
