Looking back: si + pluperfect subjunctive, and mixed conditionals

Look back on the past and imagine how things could have turned out, with the full conditional system.

From the scene Si me lo hubieran dicho… (If someone had told me…)

In short

Si + hubiera + participle, then habría + participle imagines a different past. Mix them when the times differ.

Your turn

Which one goes with if you hadn't lost your keys, we'd never have met?

Options: si no me hubiera ayudado, ahora estaría en Galicia · si no hubieras perdido las llaves, no nos habríamos conocido · si me lo hubieran dicho, no me lo habría creído

Show answer

if you hadn't lost your keys, we'd never have met → si no hubieras perdido las llaves, no nos habríamos conocido

How it works

Si + pluperfect subjunctive (hubiera dicho) with the conditional perfect (habría creído) imagines a different past.

Good to know

Mix them when the time frames differ: a past condition with a present result (si no me hubiera ayudado, ahora estaría…) or a present condition with a past result (si fueras más valiente, la habrías abierto).
