Irony and sarcasm
Recognise and use irony: tone, ¡hombre!, ya, claro, ¡lo que faltaba!.
From the scene ¡Qué puntual, hombre! (How punctual, man!)
In short
Irony says the opposite with a flat tone: ¡qué puntual! to someone late. Ya, claro means yeah, right.
Your turn
Which one goes with what a lovely day! (= a horrible one)?
Options: ya, claro · ¡qué día más bonito! · ¡qué puntual, hombre!
Show answer
what a lovely day! (= a horrible one) → ¡qué día más bonito!
How it works
Irony says the opposite of what you mean, and the tone and the situation give it away: ¡qué puntual! to someone an hour late.
Good to know
Ya, claro and sí, sí said flatly mean "yeah, right"; ¡hombre! adds emphasis (to anyone, not only men); ¡lo que faltaba! means "that's all we needed!".
