De + infinitive and the gerund as conditions

Express conditions compactly with de + infinitive and with a gerund.

From the scene De tener el dinero… (If I had the money…)

In short

De + infinitive or a gerund can replace a si clause: de tener el dinero means si tuviera el dinero.

Your turn

Which one goes with if I had known?

Options: de tener el dinero, lo alquilaría · ahorrando un poco · de haberlo sabido

Show answer

if I had known → de haberlo sabido

How it works

De + infinitive can replace a si clause: de tener el dinero = si tuviera el dinero; de haberlo sabido = si lo hubiera sabido (past).

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

¿Un año? De esperar tanto, el bebé (blank) antes que el café.

Options: haya llegado · llegaría · llegue

Show answer

Good to know

A gerund can also carry a condition: ahorrando un poco = si ahorráis un poco.

Both are compact and typical of fluent speech; the tense of the main verb tells you how likely it is.
