Italian grammar

Si siedano, non si sedino: gli ordini formali

Give formal commands with the right congiuntivo forms: si siedano, si accomodino, vada.

From the scene Si sedino tutti! (Sit down, everyone!)

In short

Formal commands use the congiuntivo: si sieda, si siedano, vada, venga. Si sedino, vadi and venghi are mistakes.

Your turn

Which one goes with make yourselves comfortable (formal plural)?

Options: si siedano · si alzino · si accomodino

Show answer

make yourselves comfortable (formal plural) → si accomodino

How it works

Formal commands, to one person (Lei) or to several (Loro), use the present congiuntivo: si sieda, si siedano, si accomodino, si alzino.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Tu, (blank). Che il Loro non l'hai mai usato.

Clue: Elena uses tu with Javi

Options: zitto · stia zitto · stiano zitti

Show answer

Tu, zitto. Che il Loro non l'hai mai usato.

You, hush. You've never used Loro anyway.

Good to know

The irregular ones trip up many natives: si sedino, vadi and venghi are mistakes for si siedano, vada and venga.

Good to know

The plural Loro form now sounds very formal, so it lives mainly in writing.

Good to know

With people you call tu, the voi command is simply the verb: sedetevi, alzatevi, guardate.
