Italian grammar

Ripasso: se + indicativo (possibilità reale) vs se + congiuntivo imperfetto (ipotesi)

Talk about starting a business, with real and hypothetical conditions.

From the scene Se lo affittassimo… (If we rented it…)

In short

Real chance: se + indicativo, result in presente / futuro. Hypothesis: se + congiuntivo imperfetto, result in condizionale.

Your turn

Which one goes with if Marisa makes the cakes, the queue will…?

Options: se lo affittassimo, apriremmo un caffè · se avessi dei risparmi, investirei · se Marisa fa le torte, la fila arriverà…

Show answer

if Marisa makes the cakes, the queue will… → se Marisa fa le torte, la fila arriverà…

How it works

You know both patterns; here they plan a business.

Good to know

Se + indicativo describes a real possibility, and the result goes in the presente or futuro: se Marisa fa le torte, la fila arriverà… Se + congiuntivo imperfetto is for something hypothetical or unlikely, and the result goes in the condizionale: se lo affittassimo, apriremmo un caffè.

Never use the congiuntivo presente after se.
