Raccontare un crimine: passato prossimo + trapassato prossimo

Tell the story of a crime, saying what had already happened before each moment.

From the scene Al ladro! (Stop, thief!)

In short

Passato prossimo moves the story on; trapassato prossimo steps back to what had already happened.

Your turn

Which one goes with he had already escaped?

Options: ha gridato · aveva visto tutto · era già scappato

Show answer

he had already escaped → era già scappato

How it works

The passato prossimo moves the story on, one event after another: Ramón ha gridato, è arrivata la polizia.

Good to know

To step back to something that had already happened before that moment, use the trapassato prossimo you know: era già scappato (he had already escaped).

Good to know

It keeps the helper verb of the passato prossimo: essere for scappare, avere for vedere and catturare.

With essere the participle agrees: la polizia era arrivata.
