Italian grammar

Mi ha chiesto se… / quanti…: riferire domande

Report the questions someone asked you, such as in a police statement.

From the scene Mi ha chiesto se l'avevo visto (He asked me if I had seen it)

In short

Reported questions: se for yes / no, keep quanti, dove… The verb moves one step back; the person shifts.

Your turn

Which one goes with if I could identify him?

Options: se potevo identificarlo · mi ha chiesto se avevo visto tutto · quanti soldi avevo con me

Show answer

if I could identify him → se potevo identificarlo

How it works

A reported yes/no question takes se (if / whether); other questions keep their question word, such as quanti or dove.

Good to know

After ha chiesto, the verb moves one step back, and the person shifts to your point of view. «Ha visto tutto?» becomes mi ha chiesto se avevo visto tutto, and «Può identificarlo?» becomes se potevo identificarlo.

Good to know

In everyday speech the verb after se stays in the indicative.
