How it works
Most Italian verbs form the congiuntivo imperfetto regularly from the infinitive: potessi (potere), sapessi (sapere).

A few keep an old Latin-style stem: facessi (fare), dicesse (dire) — and essere is fully irregular: fossi, fossi, fosse, fossimo, foste, fossero.
