After se, the congiuntivo imperfetto imagines something untrue: stem + -assi, -essi or -issi. Essere becomes fossi.

How it works
To build the congiuntivo imperfetto, take the infinitive stem and add -assi / -assi / -asse / -assimo / -aste / -assero for -are verbs (parlasse), -essi / -essi / -esse / -essimo / -este / -essero for -ere verbs (vincessimo, vivessimo), and -issi / -issi / -isse / -issimo / -iste / -issero for -ire verbs (partissimo).
Good to know
Essere is irregular: fossi, fossi, fosse, fossimo, foste, fossero. After se it imagines something that is not true.
