Perché + congiuntivo vs per + infinito

Explain purpose for someone else with perché + congiuntivo vs per + infinitive.

From the scene Perché la vedano (So that they see it)

In short

So that someone else does it: perché + congiuntivo. Same person: per + infinitive.

  • so that they see perché vedano
  • so that they understand perché capiscano
  • so that they don't pay perché non paghino
  • (for me) to take a photo per fare una foto
  • (for me) not to mess up per non sbagliare

Your turn

Which one goes with so that they understand?

Options: perché capiscano · perché vedano · perché non paghino

Show answer

so that they understand → perché capiscano

How it works

Use perché + congiuntivo when the purpose is about someone else: li porto perché vedano la cattedrale (so that THEY see).

Good to know

When the same person does both actions, use per + infinito: mi esercito per non sbagliare. With the indicativo, perché simply means "because".
