Italian grammar

Lo stile delle lettere: qualora + congiuntivo, avessi visto!; nel parlato: se lo sapevo, venivo

Recognise the formal style of old letters, and the casual imperfetto of unreal pasts in speech.

From the scene Qualora tu tornassi (If you were to come back)

In short

Letters use qualora + congiuntivo for if, and avessi visto…! is an exclamation. Casual speech may use the imperfetto in both halves.

Your turn

Which one goes with should your mother say no (formal)?

Options: avessi visto la sua faccia! · qualora tua madre ti dicesse di no · qualora tu tornassi

Show answer

should your mother say no (formal) → qualora tua madre ti dicesse di no

How it works

Formal and older writing often uses qualora (should, in the event that) + congiuntivo instead of se: qualora tua madre ti dicesse di no.

Good to know

A congiuntivo on its own can open an exclamation: avessi visto la sua faccia! (if you'd seen his face!).

Good to know

In relaxed speech many Italians replace both halves of an unreal past with the imperfetto (se restava, non nascevo); in writing use se fosse rimasta, non sarei nato.
