Italian grammar

Concordanza dei tempi: verbo al passato o al condizionale → congiuntivo imperfetto o trapassato

Match the congiuntivo to a past or conditional main verb (sequence of tenses).

From the scene Mi sarebbe piaciuto che venissi (I'd have liked you to come)

In short

After a past or conditional main verb, use congiuntivo imperfetto (same time) or trapassato (earlier).

Your turn

Which one goes with I wanted her to be my witness?

Options: volevo che fosse la mia testimone · la nonna ci teneva che Le dessi queste lettere · mi sarebbe piaciuto che tu venissi

Show answer

I wanted her to be my witness → volevo che fosse la mia testimone

How it works

When the main verb is in a past tense or the conditional (volevo, sperava, ci teneva, mi sarebbe piaciuto, non avrei mai pensato), the congiuntivo after che moves into the past too.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Rosario! Mi sarebbe piaciuto tanto che tu (blank)...

Options: venga · vieni · venissi

Show answer

Rosario! Mi sarebbe piaciuto tanto che tu venissi...

Rosario! I'd have liked it so much if you'd come...

Good to know

Congiuntivo imperfetto (che fosse, che venissi) for the same time or later, congiuntivo trapassato (che le avesse conservate) for something earlier.
