Italian grammar
Il periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà al completo: tutte le persone, essere o avere
Imagine a different past: if something had (not) happened, something else would have happened.
From the scene Se non fossi tornata… (If you hadn't gone back…)
In short
Unreal past: se + congiuntivo trapassato, then condizionale passato. Each half picks essere or avere.
Your turn
Which one goes with if they hadn't married, you wouldn't have been born?
Options: se non fosse tornata, non l'avrebbe sposato · se non fossi tornata, avremmo conquistato Madrid · se non si fossero sposati, non saresti nato
Show answer
if they hadn't married, you wouldn't have been born → se non si fossero sposati, non saresti nato
How it works
You know the set pattern se l'avessi saputo, sarei venuta.
Good to know
Now use it in every person: se + congiuntivo trapassato (fossi, fosse, fossimo, fossero / avessi, avessimo, avessero + participle) and the condizionale passato for the imagined result (sarei, saresti, avrebbe, avremmo + participle).
Good to know
Each half chooses essere or avere as in the passato prossimo: tornare and nascere take essere (and agree: se non fosse tornata, saresti nato), sposare and sapere take avere.
