Il fatto che / che + congiuntivo come soggetto

Argue about facts and what they do or don't prove.

From the scene Il fatto che sia nuovo... (The fact that it is new…)

In short

A clause as subject, or after non significa che, takes the congiuntivo: il fatto che sia nuovo. Dimostra che takes the indicativo.

Your turn

Which one goes with doesn't mean it is better?

Options: che abbia l'ascensore · non significa che sia migliore · il fatto che sia nuovo

Show answer

doesn't mean it is better → non significa che sia migliore

How it works

When a whole clause is the subject of the sentence ("the fact that it is new…"), Italian puts it in the congiuntivo.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Ahia. Il fatto che (blank) ancora vivo è già un miracolo.

Clue: lui (il portavoce)

Options: sia · essere · siano

Show answer

Ahia. Il fatto che sia ancora vivo è già un miracolo.

Ooh. The fact that he's still alive is a miracle.

Good to know

Il fatto che sia nuovo… In speech you can drop "il fatto" and just start with che: che abbia l'ascensore non significa che abbia un'anima.

Good to know

After non significa che / non implica che, the congiuntivo again. Dimostrare che (it shows that) states a fact, so it takes the indicativo.

the fact that it is new il fatto che sia nuovo
