Italian grammar

Essere + participio: l'azione (sono stati chiusi, da chi) vs lo stato (sono chiusi; era sigillata = non più)

Tell an action (è stata chiusa) from the state it leaves behind (è chiusa).

From the scene Era sigillata (It was sealed)

In short

Essere stato + participle = the action (when, by whom). Essere + participle = the resulting state now.

Your turn

Which one goes with they are closed (now)?

Options: sono chiusi · sono stati chiusi ieri sera · la porta è sigillata

Show answer

they are closed (now) → sono chiusi

How it works

Essere + participle can describe the action itself, often with when or by whom: sono stati chiusi ieri sera dall'immobiliare.

Good to know

It can also describe the state that results from it, what you find now, with no agent: la porta è sigillata, la vendita è già firmata.

Good to know

The imperfect (era sigillata) describes a past state, often implying it no longer holds. The participle agrees in both.
