Italian grammar

Consigliare/suggerire/avvertire + DI + infinito; insistere perché + congiuntivo imperfetto

Report advice, suggestions and warnings, and tell a reported fact from a reported order.

From the scene Mi ha consigliato di... (She advised me to…)

In short

Advise or warn someone di + infinitive: mi ha consigliato di accettare. After ha insistito, perché + congiuntivo imperfetto.

Your turn

Which one goes with the bank suggested I take my time?

Options: la banca mi ha suggerito di non avere fretta · il mio avvocato mi ha consigliato di accettare · mi ha avvertito di non azzardarmi a vendere

Show answer

the bank suggested I take my time → la banca mi ha suggerito di non avere fretta

How it works

You know di + infinitive for reporting a request (mi ha chiesto di aiutarla).

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Don Ramón, il portavoce dice che l'offerta (blank).

Clue: a fact

Options: sale · salga · salisse

Show answer

Good to know

Advice and warnings work the same way: consigliare / suggerire / avvertire qualcuno DI fare qualcosa (mi ha consigliato di accettare, mi ha avvertito di non vendere).

Good to know

Italian prefers di + infinitive here to che + congiuntivo whenever the advice is given to someone.

Good to know

Insistere takes perché + congiuntivo imperfetto after a past verb (ha insistito perché assaggiassi i suoi manghi).

Good to know

Dire works both ways: with the indicativo it passes on a fact (dice che sale), with di + infinitive an order (le dice di chiamarlo).
