Italian grammar

Chiunque + congiuntivo (whoever); chi + indicativo

Talk about 'whoever' and 'anyone who' with chi and chiunque + congiuntivo, when nobody yet knows who it will be.

From the scene Chiunque voglia il ruolo... (Whoever wants the role…)

In short

Chiunque (whoever) takes the congiuntivo. Chi (the one who) takes the indicativo.

Your turn

Which one goes with anyone who feels like it?

Options: chiunque voglia il ruolo · chiunque ottenga il ruolo · chiunque ne abbia voglia

Show answer

anyone who feels like it → chiunque ne abbia voglia

How it works

Chiunque (whoever, anyone who) is followed by the congiuntivo, because we don't know who it will be: chiunque voglia il ruolo, venga domani.

Good to know

Chi (the one who, people who), which you already know, normally takes the indicative: chi vuole essere una star deve rischiare, chi vince mi offre il pranzo.
