Italian grammar

A + infinito e gerundio come condizione (a saperlo, avendo il locale)

Express conditions compactly with a + infinitive or a gerund instead of a se-clause.

From the scene A saperlo… (Had I known…)

In short

A short condition: a + infinitive (a saperlo) or a gerund (avendo il locale) instead of a se-clause.

Your turn

Which one goes with if we waited that long?

Options: ad aspettare tanto · a saperlo, sarei andata · a chiederglielo io

Show answer

if we waited that long → ad aspettare tanto

How it works

Italian can pack a condition into a short phrase instead of a se-clause.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Options: Avuto · Avendo · Avere

Show answer

Ancora non ce l'abbiamo. Avendo i soldi, lo affitterei domani stesso.

We haven't got it yet. If I had the money, I'd rent it tomorrow.

Good to know

A + infinitive is very common in speech: a saperlo (if I'd known), ad aspettare tanto (if we waited that long), a chiederglielo io (if I asked him).

Good to know

The main verb (often in the condizionale) tells you whether it is past or imagined.

Good to know

The gerund does the same, especially for real conditions: avendo il locale, il resto arriva da sé; risparmiando un po', in un anno ce l'avete.
