German grammar
Wiederholung: ich hoffe, …; berichtete Rede ohne dass; Passiv
Follow a story about a broken "lift" and an official letter, recapping ich hoffe, …, reported speech without dass and the passive.
From the scene Schon wieder kaputt? (Broken again?)
In short
Ich hoffe takes a main clause or dass + verb last. Reported speech without dass keeps verb second; notices use the passive.

Which one goes with they say they want an answer?
Options: sie sagen, sie wollen eine Antwort · ich hoffe, Sie sagen ihnen · ich habe ihnen gesagt, ich überlege es mir noch
Show answer
they say they want an answer → sie sagen, sie wollen eine Antwort
How it works
Ich hoffe can be followed by a main clause (ich hoffe, Sie sagen ihnen…) or by dass with the verb at the end (ich hoffe, dass Sie ihnen … sagen).
Good to know
Reported speech without dass keeps main-clause word order (sie sagen, sie wollen eine Antwort), and notices speak in the passive: hier wird nichts verkauft.
