Verlauf ohne Verlaufsform: nach und nach, immer + Komparativ, schon seit + Präsens, herum- + Verb

Describe gradual progress, things that have been going on for a while, and gossip, without a progressive tense.

From the scene Es geht voran (We're making progress)

In short

No -ing form: use nach und nach, immer + -er, schon seit + present, or herum- for going around doing.

Your turn

Which one goes with my money is running out?

Options: das erzählst du mir schon seit drei Wochen · mein Geld wird immer weniger · es geht voran, nach und nach

Show answer

my money is running out → mein Geld wird immer weniger

How it works

German has no -ing form like English “is getting”, so it uses other tools.

Good to know

Gradual change: nach und nach, langsam, or immer + comparative (mein Geld wird immer weniger).

Good to know

Something going on for a while up to now: schon seit + the PRESENT tense, not the Perfekt (das erzählst du mir schon seit drei Wochen).

Good to know

Going around doing something: the separable prefix herum- (sie erzählt im ganzen Viertel herum), often with ständig.
