Superlativ + Relativsatz mit je: der beste …, den ich je …; das Leckerste, was …

Talk about the best, the most beautiful, the tastiest thing you have ever known.

From the scene Der beste Kaffee, den ich je getrunken habe (The best coffee I've ever tasted)

In short

After a superlative, add je for ever, with a normal verb. After das Schönste or das Leckerste, use was.

Your turn

Which one goes with the best coffee I've ever tasted?

Options: der beste Kaffee, den ich je getrunken habe · die schönste Landschaft, die ich je gesehen habe · die beste Ernte, die es hier je gegeben hat

Show answer

the best coffee I've ever tasted → der beste Kaffee, den ich je getrunken habe

How it works

After a superlative, German adds je (or jemals) for 'ever' and keeps the normal indicative: der beste Kaffee, den ich je getrunken habe.

Good to know

The relative pronoun agrees with the noun (die Landschaft, die…; der Kaffee, den…), but after a superlative used as a noun (das Schönste, das Leckerste) it is was.

Good to know

Telling it in the past, step back to the Plusquamperfekt: das Leckerste, was ich bis dahin getrunken hatte.
