Your turn

Which one goes with I'm very sorry you found out like this?

Options: es war nicht meine Absicht, dass es so herauskommt · ich bedaure, dass es Sie verärgert hat · es tut mir sehr leid, dass Sie es so erfahren haben

Show answer

I'm very sorry you found out like this → es tut mir sehr leid, dass Sie es so erfahren haben

How it works

Es war nicht meine Absicht (I didn't mean to) takes zu + infinitive when you are the one acting (Sie zu kränken) and a dass-clause when something else happened (dass es so herauskommt).

Good to know

Es tut mir leid, dass… and the more formal ich bedaure, dass… (I regret that) take the normal indicative, usually the Perfekt for something that has just happened: dass Sie es so erfahren haben.

I didn't mean it to come out like this es war nicht meine Absicht, dass es so herauskommt
