German grammar

Richtung, von … bis, durch, über

Describe a route: direction, start and end, and what you go through.

From the scene Richtung Norden, durch den Nebel (Heading north, through the fog)

In short

Richtung + place gives the direction. Von … bis gives start and end. Durch and über take the accusative.

Your turn

Which one goes with from Zamora to here?

Options: von Zamora bis hier · wir waren Richtung Norden unterwegs · durch den Nebel

Show answer

from Zamora to here → von Zamora bis hier

How it works

Richtung + place, with no article, gives the direction, not the end of the trip: Richtung Norden.

Good to know

Von … bis marks where a trip starts and ends: von Zamora bis hier. Durch + accusative means through: durch den Nebel.

Good to know

For going over or across, über takes the accusative too: über die Berge.
