German grammar

Konjunktiv II ohne wenn: Inversion bei hypothetischen Bedingungen

Talk about starting a business, with real and hypothetical conditions.

From the scene Und wenn wir ein Café aufmachen? (What if we open a café?)

In short

Drop wenn and put the Konjunktiv II verb first for a hypothetical. A real possibility keeps wenn + present.

Your turn

Which one goes with if Marisa bakes the cakes, the queue will reach the square?

Options: wenn Marisa die Kuchen backt, reicht die Schlange bis zum Platz · hätten wir das Lokal, würden wir ein Café eröffnen · hätte ich Ersparnisse, würde ich investieren

Show answer

if Marisa bakes the cakes, the queue will reach the square → wenn Marisa die Kuchen backt, reicht die Schlange bis zum Platz

How it works

For a hypothetical condition, German can drop wenn and put the Konjunktiv II verb straight at the front instead.

Good to know

Hätten wir das Lokal, würden wir ein Café eröffnen (= wenn wir das Lokal hätten, würden wir ein Café eröffnen).

Good to know

It's common in spoken German and sounds a touch more emphatic.

Good to know

A real possibility still uses wenn + present tense, exactly as you already know: wenn Marisa die Kuchen backt, reicht die Schlange bis zum Platz.

if we had the premises, we'd open a café hätten wir das Lokal, würden wir ein Café eröffnen

Tomás

Hätten wir das Lokal, würden Marisa und ich ein Café eröffnen.

If we had the premises, Marisa and I would open a café.

Your turn

What fills the gap?
