German grammar

Ich glaube (nicht), vielleicht, ich bin sicher

Give an opinion about what happened.

From the scene Ich glaube, es war Tomás (I think it was Tomás)

In short

Give an opinion with ich glaube. Without dass the verb stays second; with dass it goes last.

  • I think it was… ich glaube, es war…
  • I don't think so ich glaube nicht
  • I'm sure ich bin sicher
  • maybe vielleicht

Your turn

Which one goes with I don't think so?

Options: ich glaube nicht · ich glaube, es war… · ich bin sicher

Show answer

I don't think so → ich glaube nicht

How it works

Ich glaube, … gives your opinion. You can drop dass and keep normal word order: ich glaube, es war Tomás (= ich glaube, dass es Tomás war).

Good to know

Ich glaube nicht = I don't think so; vielleicht = maybe; ich bin sicher = I'm sure.

I think it was… ich glaube, es war…

Watch out

Without dass the verb stays second (er ist unschuldig); only with dass does it go to the end (dass er unschuldig ist).

Common mistake

Not Ich glaube, er unschuldig ist here. No dass — the verb stays second.

Ich glaube, er ist unschuldig, Frau Elena.

I think he's innocent, Frau Elena.
