German grammar

Erzählendes Präsens: Sitze ich also da, kommt einer rein… geht hin und sagt, fällt doch glatt

Tell a funny story vividly with the present tense, geht hin und… and doch glatt.

From the scene Und dann geht er hin und sagt… (And he goes and says…)

In short

To make an anecdote vivid, tell it in the present, even verb first: sitze ich also da, kommt einer rein.

Your turn

Which one goes with in comes a man?

Options: und fällt doch glatt · kommt ein Mann rein · sitze ich also im La Esquina

Show answer

in comes a man → kommt ein Mann rein

How it works

German storytellers also switch to the present tense to make a past story vivid: er steht auf, sieht mich an.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Er (blank) auf, sieht mich an und geht hin und sagt:

Clue: er, storytelling present

Options: stehe · steht · stand

Show answer

Er steht auf, sieht mich an und geht hin und sagt:

He gets up, looks at me and goes and says:

Good to know

In anecdotes the verb can even come first, like in jokes: Sitze ich also im La Esquina, kommt ein Mann rein.

Good to know

Colloquial geht hin und + verb marks a sudden or cheeky action (like English 'and he goes and…'), and doch glatt adds 'would you believe it'. This is chatting, not writing.

so there I am at La Esquina sitze ich also im La Esquina

Javi

Sitze ich also im La Esquina bei einem Kaffee, kommt ein Mann mit Helm rein.

I'm at La Esquina having a coffee, and in comes a man in a helmet.

He trips over a chair and goes and falls right onto my coffee.
