Put the reason first with da, give it afterwards with weil, and make (or spot) an excuse with nämlich and die Sache ist….

From the scene Da er nicht rangeht… (Since he isn't answering…)

In short

Put da first for a reason; weil usually follows the main idea. Nämlich explains and never stands first.

Your turn

Which one goes with since he's the owner?

Show answer

since he's the owner → da er der Eigentümer ist

How it works

When the reason comes first, German prefers da: Da er nicht rangeht, werfen wir ihm einen Zettel ein.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Show answer

Since it's so important, I'll read it to you.

Good to know

Weil usually follows the main idea and answers "why?": Ich unterschreibe nicht, weil ich ohne Brille nichts lesen kann.

Good to know

Excuses and explanations come with nämlich, which never stands first (ich hatte nämlich mein Handy auf lautlos), or with spoken die Sache ist … ("the thing is …").

since he isn't answering, we'll leave a note da er nicht rangeht, werfen wir einen Zettel ein

Javi

Well, since he isn't answering, we'll leave him a note in the letterbox.

Your turn

What fills the gap?
