German grammar

Als + Präteritum, schon + Plusquamperfekt

Put two past events in order: what had already happened.

From the scene Als ich ankam, hatten sie schon… (When I arrived, they had already…)

In short

Als + simple past for the later event; schon + hatte / war + participle for what happened before.

Your turn

Which one goes with they'd already stopped the karaoke?

Options: er war schon gegangen · sie hatten schon mit dem Karaoke aufgehört · als wir ankamen, hatte er schon zugemacht

Show answer

they'd already stopped the karaoke → sie hatten schon mit dem Karaoke aufgehört

How it works

To order two past events, use als + simple past for the later one, and schon + hatte/war + participle for what had already happened before it.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Als ich es merkte, (blank) er schon gegangen.

Clue: gehen = movement

Options: wäre · war · hatte

Show answer

Als ich es merkte, war er schon gegangen.

By the time I noticed, he’d already gone.

Good to know

Als wir ankamen, hatte er schon zugemacht (when we arrived, it had already closed). Separable verbs keep ge- inside: zugemacht, angerufen.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Show answer
