French grammar

Rappel : si + présent (réel) vs si + imparfait + conditionnel (hypothétique)

Talk about starting a business, with real and hypothetical conditions.

From the scene Et si on ouvrait un café ? (What if we open a café?)

In short

Likely: si + present, then present or future. Hypothetical: si + imparfait, then conditional (never the conditional after si).

Your turn

Which one goes with if Marisa makes the cakes, the queue will…?

Options: si on la louait, on ouvrirait un café · si j'avais des économies, j'investirais · si Marisa fait les gâteaux, la queue ira…

Show answer

if Marisa makes the cakes, the queue will… → si Marisa fait les gâteaux, la queue ira…

How it works

Si + présent (with futur or présent in the result) describes a real, likely condition: si Marisa fait les gâteaux, la queue ira...

Good to know

Si + imparfait (with conditionnel présent in the result) describes something hypothetical or unlikely: si on la louait, on ouvrirait un café.

Good to know

Si j'avais des économies, j'investirais. Never use the conditionnel in the si-clause itself.
