Rappel — regarder en arrière : si + plus-que-parfait, et les conditionnels mixtes

Look back on the past and imagine how things could have turned out, with the full conditional system.

From the scene Si on me l'avait dit… (If someone had told me…)

In short

Looking back: si + plus-que-parfait with conditionnel passé, or mixed: si vous ne m'aviez pas aidée, je serais en Galice.

Your turn

Which one goes with if you hadn't lost your keys, we'd never have met?

Options: si vous ne m'aviez pas aidée, je serais en Galice maintenant · si tu n'avais pas perdu tes clés, on ne se serait jamais rencontrées · si on me l'avait dit, je ne l'aurais pas cru

Show answer

if you hadn't lost your keys, we'd never have met → si tu n'avais pas perdu tes clés, on ne se serait jamais rencontrées

How it works

Review: si + plus-que-parfait (si on me l'avait dit) with the conditionnel passé (je ne l'aurais pas cru) imagines a different past.

Good to know

Mix them when the time frames differ: a past condition with a present result (si vous ne m'aviez pas aidée, je serais en Galice maintenant), or a present condition with a past result (si tu étais plus courageux, tu l'aurais ouverte).

Good to know

After si, never the conditionnel.

if someone had told me, I wouldn't have believed it si on me l'avait dit, je ne l'aurais pas cru
