Tell a piece of history with the pluperfect and the passive, and recognise the passé simple of plaques and old documents.

From the scene Ici vécut un poète (A poet lived here)

In short

Tell history aloud with the passé composé, plus-que-parfait and passive. Plaques and old texts use the passé simple: ici vécut, fut écrit.

Your turn

Which one goes with my mother had told me?

Show answer

my mother had told me → ma mère me l'avait raconté

How it works

In speech you tell history with the passé composé, the plus-que-parfait for what had already happened before (ma mère me l'avait raconté) and the passive when the thing matters more than who did it (a été classée).

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Show answer

This changes everything! The house next door was listed as a historic monument for less than that.

Good to know

Written history, plaques and old documents use the passé simple instead of the passé composé: ici vécut (here lived), ce poème fut écrit (was written).

Good to know

You need to recognise it, not to speak it.

Good to know

This trunk was my mother's. I had never opened it fully.
