French grammar

L’impératif poli avec vous

Give polite formal instructions with the vous imperative.

From the scene Entrez, asseyez-vous (Come in, sit down)

In short

Polite commands use the vous form without vous: entrez, prenez un café. Reflexives keep it: asseyez-vous. Être gives soyez.

  • come in (vous) entrez
  • sit down (vous) asseyez-vous
  • don't worry (vous) ne vous inquiétez pas
  • have a coffee (vous) prenez un café
  • (informal) sit down assieds-toi (tu)

Your turn

Which one goes with sit down (vous)?

Options: ne vous inquiétez pas · asseyez-vous · entrez

Show answer

sit down (vous) → asseyez-vous

How it works

A formal command to someone you address as vous uses the vous form of the present tense as the imperative, without the word vous in front.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Entrez et (blank), s'il vous plaît.

Clue: formal, with vous

Options: asseyez-vous · assieds-toi · asseyons-nous

Show answer

Entrez et asseyez-vous, s'il vous plaît.

Come in and sit down, please.

Good to know

Entrer → entrez, s'asseoir → asseyez-vous, ne pas s'inquiéter → ne vous inquiétez pas. Être is the exception: soyez (be), as in soyez gentil.

Good to know

With tu, the same verbs give a different, informal form: entre, assieds-toi. Reflexive pronouns stay: asseyez-vous, ne vous inquiétez pas.
