French grammar

L'impératif avec en et y : donnez-m'en, vas-y, allez-y

Give commands with en and y correctly: donnez-m'en, vas-y, allez-y.

From the scene Donnez-moi-z-en ! (Sit down, everyone!)

In short

Commands with en: donnez-m'en, va-t'en, not « moi-z-en ». Va and parle add s before en or y: vas-y, parles-en.

Your turn

Which one goes with tell me about it?

Options: vas-y · parlez-m'en · donnez-m'en

Show answer

tell me about it → parlez-m'en

How it works

Before en, the pronouns moi and toi become m' and t': donnez-m'en, va-t'en.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Bien sûr que je sais. Et maintenant, vous deux : (blank), mettez la table !

Options: y allez · allez-y · allez-z-y

Show answer

Bien sûr que je sais. Et maintenant, vous deux : allez-y, mettez la table !

Of course I do. And now, you two: off you go, set the table!

Good to know

The popular « donnez-moi-z-en » adds a z that has no place in writing or careful speech.

Good to know

A tu command ending in -e or -a, such as va or parle, takes an s before en or y, so you hear a z sound: vas-y, parles-en.

Good to know

With other pronouns, nothing special happens: tais-toi, regarde-la.
