Le gérondif et le participe se rapportent au sujet

Make a gérondif or a participle at the start of a sentence belong to the subject of the main verb.

From the scene En partant pour Medellín… (She walked out, slamming the door)

In short

A gérondif or participle before the main clause describes its subject. If someone else does it, use quand or pendant que.

Your turn

Which one goes with looking for the rings (Javi looks)?

Options: quand Javi est parti · en cherchant les alliances · en claquant la porte

Show answer

How it works

A gérondif or a participle placed before the main clause normally describes the subject of the main verb: en cherchant les alliances, Javi est tombé.

Your turn

Pick the word that fits the line.

Là, c'est le curé qui arrive en retard. Le participe aussi va avec le (blank).

Options: sujet · verbe · complément

Show answer

Là, c'est le curé qui arrive en retard. Le participe aussi va avec le sujet.

There it's the priest who arrives late. The participle goes with the subject too.

Good to know

If the action belongs to someone else, use a full clause: quand Javi est parti pour Medellín, Nuria l'a attendu.

Otherwise the sentence says something odd: arrivé en retard, le curé… means the priest was late.
