French grammar

J'ai pu, j'ai mis — participes passés irréguliers

Say what you couldn't do and what you put somewhere, in the past.

From the scene Je n'ai pas pu l'imprimer (I couldn't print it)

In short

Pouvoir gives pu and mettre gives mis, both with avoir. Ne … pas wraps avoir: je n'ai pas pu imprimer.

  • I could not print je n'ai pas pu imprimer
  • she could not either elle n'a pas pu non plus
  • I put the paper in j'ai mis le papier
  • someone put quelqu'un a mis

Your turn

Which one goes with she could not either?

Options: elle n'a pas pu non plus · je n'ai pas pu imprimer · j'ai mis le papier

Show answer

she could not either → elle n'a pas pu non plus

How it works

Pouvoir and mettre have irregular past participles.

Good to know

Pouvoir → pu (je n'ai pas pu = I couldn't / didn't manage to), mettre → mis (j'ai mis = I put). Both take avoir.
