Say you are hungry, thirsty, hot or cold.

In short
Hunger, thirst, heat, cold and age use avoir, not être: j'ai faim, tu as chaud, j'ai vingt ans.

How it works
French says "I have hunger": avoir + faim / soif / chaud / froid — and age too: j'ai quatre-vingts ans.

Watch out
Never je suis chaud or je suis froid — that doesn't mean you feel hot or cold (je suis chaud even sounds like "I'm up for it").
Common mistake
