French grammar

Il y a, depuis, jusqu'à, ne... plus

Say how long ago something happened, and for how long.

From the scene Il y a une semaine (A week ago)

In short

Ago: passé composé + il y a; still true: present + depuis. Jusqu'à = until, ne … plus = not any more.

  • an hour ago il y a une heure
  • for two days (still true) depuis deux jours
  • until summer jusqu'à l'été
  • not any more ne... plus

Your turn

Which one goes with for two days (still true)?

Options: jusqu'à l'été · depuis deux jours · il y a une heure

Show answer

for two days (still true) → depuis deux jours

How it works

Passé composé + il y a + time = "ago": il m'a appelé il y a une heure (he called me an hour ago).

Good to know

Present + depuis + time = "for" something still true: je suis serrurier depuis deux jours. Jusqu'à = until; ne... plus = not any more.

Watch out

For something still true use depuis, not pour — depuis deux jours, not pour deux jours; for a finished event use il y a, not depuis.

Common mistake

Not depuis or jusqu'à here. A week ago.

Tout a commencé il y a une semaine.
