he said → il a dit

How it works

The passé composé tells the main past events: l'acteur est parti, il a dit qu'il ne pouvait pas continuer.

Good to know

The plus-que-parfait (avait + participle) steps further back, to before that: l'autre jour, il avait dit qu'il adorait le rôle (before he left).

Good to know

After a dit que, a present verb moves back to the imparfait: « je cherche » → il a dit qu'il cherchait.
