Celui qui / celle qui / ceux qui
Say 'the one(s) who' and 'whoever' with celui qui / celle qui / ceux qui.
From the scene Celui qui arrive en retard… (Whoever arrives late…)
In short
The one(s) who: celui qui, celle qui, ceux qui, celles qui, matching the person. Whoever: celui qui + indicative.
Your turn
Which one goes with the ones who are coming?
Options: ceux qui viennent · celle qui ne parle pas · celui qui se plaint toujours
Show answer
the ones who are coming → ceux qui viennent
How it works
Celui qui, celle qui, ceux qui, celles qui = the one(s) who, and they agree with the person(s) meant.
Good to know
Celle qui ne parle pas (aunt Rosa), ceux qui viennent (the cousins). It's qui because it is the subject of the next verb.
Good to know
For 'whoever', French just uses celui qui + the normal indicative — celui qui arrive en retard s'assoit avec Monsieur Ramón — never the subjunctive.
