Spanish grammar

Vosotros commands: mirad, sentaos, not sentaros

Give written vosotros commands correctly, with and without os.

From the scene ¡Sentaos! (Sit down, everyone!)

In short

Vosotros commands swap the infinitive's -r for -d: mirad, poned. With os attached, drop the -d: sentaos, levantaos, not sentaros.

  • look! (you all) mirad
  • set the table! (you all) poned la mesa
  • sit down! (not "sentaros") sentaos
  • get up! (you all) levantaos
  • quiet! (a general order) a callar

Your turn

Which one goes with set the table! (you all)?

Options: mirad · sentaos · poned la mesa

Show answer

set the table! (you all) → poned la mesa

How it works

The vosotros command swaps the final -r of the infinitive for -d: mirad, poned, escuchad.

Good to know

When os is attached, that -d drops: sentaos, levantaos, callaos. Idos keeps it, although iros is now also accepted.

Good to know

Many people say sentaros or callaros when they speak, but in writing and careful speech the standard form is sentaos.

Good to know

A + infinitive (¡a callar!) gives a general order to anyone.
