Spanish grammar

The gerund: the same moment, yes; afterwards, no

Use the gerund for the same moment or the manner, not for what happens later.

From the scene Salió dando un portazo (She walked out, slamming the door)

In short

A gerund marks the same moment or the manner: salió dando un portazo. Not for a later event, nor as an adjective.

Your turn

Which one goes with looking for the rings (same moment)?

Options: y volvió un año después · buscando los anillos · salió dando un portazo

Show answer

looking for the rings (same moment) → buscando los anillos

How it works

A gerund (the -ando / -iendo form) describes something happening at the same time as the main verb, or the way it happens: salió dando un portazo.

Good to know

It should not be used for an event that clearly comes later: se fue y volvió un año después, not se fue volviendo.

Good to know

Nor should it describe a noun like an adjective: una caja que contenía, not una caja conteniendo.
